University of Akureyri
Iceland
August 6-10, 2008

As a consequence of the organization of our conference as a “moveable feast” (see conference main page), participants will need to buy a transportation and accommodation package, which will include:

Bus transport: Reykjavik-Hólar-Akureyri-Reykjavik (includes significant sightseeing in the Borgarfjördur and Mývatn areas)

Accommodation at Hólar: nights of August 6th and 7th

Food service at Hólar: 2 breakfasts, 1 lunch and 2 dinners

The price of this package is being negotiated and will be announced when finalized. No practical alternative services are available at Hólar, which is located in the countryside.

Apart from the lodging at Hólar included in the package, participants will have to book accommodation in Akureyri for the nights of August 8th and 9th, and in Reykjavik, at least for the nights of August 5th and 10th (unless arriving from the USA on the morning of the 6th, which is possible, but not recommended). If arriving in Iceland prior to the 5th or departing later than the 11th, additional nights will be needed.

The local organizers have been negotiating conference prices with a number of hotels and guesthouses in Reykjavik and in Akureyri, and these will be listed below as they become available. However, individuals may be able to find better deals by searching on the web (a list of some hotels will be provided soon on this page). Participants should certainly not neglect to check special hotel prices that may be offered by the airlines in connection with travel. Accommodation in Iceland is rather expensive, but one can often get excellent special deals, particularly if combined with travel.

Please note that there is huge pressure on accommodation in both Reykjavik and Akureyri in the month of August. The importance of making one’s arrangements EARLY cannot be overemphasized.

Details

Attention!: Negotiated prices for accommodation have necessarily been set in Icelandic krónur (ÍSK). The ÍSK is a volatile currency, with exchange rates varying from day to day. It has recently been strong against the USD, ECU and GBP. We can hope that the ÍSK will weaken in 2007-2008 (this is expected, but no promises!). You will need to compute for yourselves what the ÍSK prices mean in your home currency, using a currency converter.
